A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a secure connection that routes your internet traffic through a private server instead of directly through your internet provider. It creates an encrypted tunnel that protects your data and hides your IP address, so you can browse more privately and access content that may be restricted in your region.
How does a VPN work?
When you connect to a VPN, your device talks to a VPN server. An encrypted tunnel is set up between you and that server. Your traffic goes through this tunnel, so your ISP and others on the network can't see what you're doing. Websites see the VPN server's IP address instead of yours. When you disconnect, your connection goes back to normal.
- 1. Your device connects to a VPN server (e.g. in another country).
- 2. All traffic is encrypted before it leaves your device.
- 3. The VPN server sends your requests to the internet and returns the data through the same secure tunnel.
- 4. To the outside world, your traffic appears to come from the VPN server’s IP, not yours.
Why use a VPN?
Your ISP and others on the network can’t see which sites you visit or what you do online when the tunnel is active.
Bypass geo-blocks and censorship. Connect to servers in other countries to reach content and services available there.
On public Wi‑Fi, encryption protects your data from snooping and simple attacks.
Websites and trackers see the VPN server’s IP instead of yours, which can reduce tracking and targeted ads.
When do people use a VPN?
- Streaming content from other regions
- Browsing on public Wi‑Fi (cafés, airports)
- Bypassing blocks at school or work
- Keeping activity private from the ISP
- Accessing sites blocked in their country
- Adding a layer of security on any network
